Girl Up Club Hosts "Scary Truth Trail"
Last Wednesday, the Girl Up club held their first “Scary Truth Trail.” Girl Up is a foundation run by the United Nations, and empowers girls and women across the globe. This trail was an idea from past club members that have since graduated. The trail took place on the cross country trail, and was complete with a fog machine, carved pumpkins, and ghosts.
The club wanted to highlight the realities that girls and women face around the world. The trail was complete with many signs, sponsored by faculty and community members, with scary statistics. Some of these include: 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (United Nations Office for Coordinating Humanitarian Affairs, 2020), 30% of females globally have reported that their first sexual experience was forced (United Nations Office for Coordinating Humanitarian Affairs, 2020), and 1 out of every 5 American women has been the victim of attempted rape or completed rape in her lifetime, (Smith, S. G. (2018). The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2015 data brief).
The trail saw a great response, and received many donations for a local women's shelter. The trail also offered hot cider, cookies, and pumpkin seeds. Overall, the impact that the trail had was very positive. The club hopes to continue this for years to come. Special thanks to everyone who helped out, and came to see some scary truths!
