Laker Boys Find Their Stride on Parent Night, Sweep of Fruitport in First Round of Districts

The Lakers Boys Varsity Basketball team has experienced a non-stop schedule recently, playing four games in the course of only one week prior to Tuesday night’s home win against the Allendale Falcons. Over those four games, the Lakers lost by less than five points in three out of the four games played. This Spring Lake team has been battle-tested time and time again all season long with tough losses. But, the team managed to pull off an impressive 69-54 win against a respectable Allendale team whom they had been defeated by earlier in the season by fifteen points.

The game started off with both teams exchanging baskets in a very competitive first quarter. After the first quarter, one thing was clear to the boys’ basketball team - the presence of the long-missed student section the Lakers haven’t had throughout the season cheering on the team. However, the increase of noise in the building did not push the Lakers to take the lead until the second half. The Lakers trailed 30-36 going into the locker room at the break. Following halftime, the Lakers came out with some hot shooting started by two back to back three pointers by senior point guard Sam Sheridan to tie the game at 36. The Lakers continued to play on fire in the third quarter with two more three pointers from juniors Jackson Core and Porter Saunders with one a piece. Jaron Little held down the paint with a strong post presence both offensively and defensively. Little also gave the Lakers four points in their third quarter run. The Lakers never looked back after taking a 47-41 lead heading into the fourth. Spring Lake went on to close out the game by a 15 point deficit in a crucial 69-54 win to build the Lakers confidence and momentum as they inch closer to the district tournament. One thing has always been clear in the sport of basketball, when it becomes time to win or go home, anything can happen. Despite the Lakers’ 3-10 record a win like this could help turn the tides heading into the postseason. The Spring Lake boys will take on Fruitport on the road for their last regular season game before facing Fruitport once again on Tuesday, March 23rd on their home floor to kick off the district tournament.

Tuesday, March 23rd, the Laker boys kicked off districts on the floor with a win against town rival Fruitport Trojans. They ended with a 60-48 score. This is the third win over the Trojans this season, and the second win over the last 4 days. Be sure to keep up with the boys’ second round of Districts tonight against Orchard View!
