Laker Football Clinches First Playoff Victory Since ’01

With a respectable 4-2 regular-season record, this Lakers football team earned the number one seed in their eight-team district for the 2020 playoffs. This Spring Lake football team has shown promise and potential all season long, and on Friday night the Laker’s talent was demonstrated in the Laker’s first playoff win in 19 years. The team made history in dramatic fashion by winning the playoff opener in a whomping 48-0 victory against the eight seed Fremont Packers. The Lakers started the game with their foot on the gas pedal and never looked back. The fast Spring Lake start all started with sophomore Alex Lee’s 44-yard touchdown run that sparked a 35-point unanswered run from the Lakers before heading into the half with a large 35-0 lead. Other scorers in the first half of play included Steve Ready scoring on three separate occasions (8-yard run, 5-yard run, and a 33-yard reception) along with a Derrick Pageot 14-yard TD reception. The Lakers then cruised through the second half with a running clock by adding two more Christian Folkert touchdowns (14-yard run and a 97-yard run) before the night came to an end making the final score 48-0.

A lot has been said about Spring Lake’s explosive offense this year, but the defensive side of the ball for the Lakers should not be overlooked. By pitching this shutout, the Laker defense has held their opponents to under two touchdowns in five out of the seven games played this year. As well as keeping two of their opponents West Catholic (6-1) and Unity Christian (7-0), two high powered offenses averaging 33 points and 45 points significantly under their average points scored per game.

The Lakers will continue their playoff run on Friday November 6th at 7:00 P.M. in a district semifinal matchup versus the Forest Hills Eastern Hawks. The game should be played at Grabinski Field if the field conditions are safe to play on, but location of the game is still to be determined.
