Mystery Teacher

This week’s mystery teacher has been living in Michigan their whole life. They were born in Alpena, Michigan. From there, they moved to Mt. Pleasant, Grand Haven, Norton Shores, and currently Grand Rapids. As a young kid, this teacher had the nickname of “Skippy” that they got from their uncles and aunts. They don’t know where this nickname came from, but it just stuck. Their middle name is also Marie. They are the oldest sibling of three. They have two younger brothers named Josh and Jacob. They are also the oldest of 11 cousins. They are all very close since they all grew up together in the same town. This teacher has been friends with their best friend since fourth grade and was recently the maid of honor at her wedding!

This teacher’s most memorable memory in high school was just “a lot of collective moments of spending time with friends.” They spent a lot of time driving around with friends listening to music or going to someone’s house. “There are a lot of great memories from those times!” While in high school, this teacher drove a 2001 Gold Ford Taurus. The sport this teacher played while in high school was golf. This teacher’s favorite class in high school was AP European History. “I had an awesome teacher, Mr. Stoppa, who taught in a way that I’d never experienced before---we’d do a lot of active lessons like re-enacting the Galileo trial or dressing up as historical figures.” This teacher expresses how this was the hardest class of their high school career, but it taught them study habits and writing skills that they continued in college.

This teacher attended college at Central Michigan University for their undergraduate and Grand Valley State University for graduate school. During this teacher’s pastime, they love to travel to new places. Some of their favorite places they’ve ever visited include Iceland, Denmark, Hawaii, France, and Italy. This teacher’s favorite quote is, “Do the best you can until you know better… then when you know better, do better.” -Maya Angelou.

This teacher’s first child is arriving in January! They currently have a dog and two cats. They say the best part of their job as a teacher at Spring Lake is the people. They love the community of awesome students and staff members! The last book this teacher read is Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. They say a lot of people know this, but this teacher is a huge Harry Potter fan! This sparked their love of reading at a young age. This teacher says they are not very athletic, but if they could play any professional sport, they would play golf. If this teacher wasn’t a teacher, they would be a lawyer. Their favorite vacation spot is anywhere warm. This teacher says they are very clumsy! The most embarrassing moment they’ve had as a teacher is tripping over a backpack last year. Their favorite restaurant is Bangkok Taste in Grand Rapids. This teacher says, “I have an eclectic taste in music… Here are some random current songs on my playlist: “3 Nights” by Dominic Fike, “Breezeblocks” by alt-J, “Dissolve” by Absofacto, “Movement” by Hozier, “Easy on Me” by Adele, and “To Be So Lonely” by Harry Styles. I’ll be listening to a lot of Taylor Swift on Friday when RED is re-released.” If this teacher could change anything about education if they were in charge, they would place less emphasis on standardized testing and promote creating authentic learning experiences for students.
