SLHS Girls Varsity Basketball Takes W Against Holland Christian, Falls to Montague in Districts
After Spring Lake Girls Varsity Basketball’s 18 point victory against Holland Christian Tuesday (3/2), the Laker girls found themselves in a tough fight from the start for the rematch that took place on Saturday (3/6). The Maroons came out strong, leading by 8 in the first quarter before the Lakers cut it down to 4 at the break. The second quarter fell close to equal with the Lakers scoring 11 and the Maroons scoring 12. Leading at the half 21-26, Holland Christian startled the Lakers with tenacity and vigor. The Lakers shortly found their grit in the locker room and came out dominating the second half.
“Our game plan was to focus on our defense and we did it. That’s how we ended up winning.” Spring Lake’s junior point guard, Meah Bajt, says. Allowing only 10 points from the Maroons in the second half, the Lakers fought their way back. In the final quarter, the Lakers were in double bonus, which helped secure their win for an end score of 43-36.
Overall, the game was a tough fight for the Lakers, but they came out with the W. The victory against the Maroons changed the Lakers record to 5 wins and 5 losses. The girls team fell in Districts to Montague 38-60, ending their season. The Lakers said goodbye to seniors Masen Carey and Zoe Walters, scoring 5 points each, and Kylie Spooner chipping in 4. They played hard throughout the season and ultimately went 6-8 to finish the season.
