Spring Lake Band Takes First at Kentwood Invitational

With the final competition of the year, Spring Lake High School’s marching band was able to win it again! They were able to score the highest that they ever have achieved this year with a 93.1 at East Kentwood. This gave them the title of class B champions, with caption awards for best marching, and percussion. Their score was also able to place them third overall out of the twenty-two bands that attended and competed in the East Kentwood Invitational.

This competition was the last out of the four that the band did this year, performing in the scholastic band division. The band scored first place in all but one of their competitions. It was the first time in years that they have been able to obtain two grand champion awards at different competitions in the same year. This was also the first time that the band has obtained three percussion awards in one year.

Spring Lake’s Band’s show, “Dark As Night,” has been the first show since 2019 that they have been able to perform in front of a live audience. This performance has been one that many have cherished as it has finally allowed us as a band to get back to a feeling of normal compared to last year’s endeavors.

As the seniors of last year didn’t get a proper send-off or season at all, I and many of the other seniors of this year’s marching band can all agree on the fact that we have loved being able to perform throughout this year. Fellow senior band member Xavier Reedy stated, “I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to do these past four years, and it’s definitely weird that I’ll never be able to march again with the band.”

This has been a year that will go down in history for Spring Lake Marching Band. The accomplishments made this year are feats that have not been accomplished in many years. This has been a great start of the year for the band and they will continue to perform through the symphonic, concert, and jazz ensembles for the rest of the year. Spring Lake Marching Band has one final indoor marching band show, “The Huddle” that will take place on Nov. 6th Go Lakers!
