Spring Lake Girls Varsity Basketball take down Coopersville 41-17

The Spring Lake Girls Varsity basketball team started off their season strong with a defeat of Coopersville on Friday, February 12th. Coopersville came to the Lakers court to win, and the Lakers fiercely defended their home territory with a 41-17 win.

The Lakers took an early lead in the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter when Jennifer Judge knocked down three corner three-pointers. Judge and Meah Bajt led the Lakers to victory with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Nicole Schmitt and Kylie Spooner also had a strong game crashing the boards with 6 rebounds a piece. Every player hustled and worked hard to contribute towards an outstanding 24 point win. Turnovers were kept to a minimum for the Lakers, but the same could not be said for the opposing Coopersville team. The Lakers cranked up the defensive pressure, led in steals by Meah Bajt and Macy Carey. Bajt managed to add 4 points to the Lakers total from fast break layups off of steals. Defensively, Zoe Walters and Clair Czadzeck handled the pressure defending Coopersville’s top-scoring post under the basket. Both worked hard to keep the ball out of her hands and out of the hoop as much as possible. The Lakers dominated every quarter of the game, making it impossible for Coppersville to come back.

Overall, this was a great win for the Lakers, starting the season off with a bang after months of postponed starting dates and no-contact.

The girls Varsity team will next play Hamilton at home on Friday, February 19 at 7pm and the live stream can be found at www.springlakeschools.org/live.
