Spring Lake Ski Team Heads to Caberfae
The Spring Lake Varsity Girls’ and Boys’ ski team headed up to Caberfae for a big race day on Friday, January 29th. It was a balmy 9 degrees when they headed out on the mountain for inspection and warm ups.
The Laker Boys, racing Giant Slalom first, took 2nd overall as a team. Griffin Phares placed 3rd, Jonah Wilhelm in 14th, Dawson Sherman in 19th, Charlie Navarre in 23rd, and Ryan Rymal in 32nd. Aidan Parker, skiing hard, took a tough wipeout at the end of the course giving him a DNF for his first run; however, he returned for his second run with a solid run.
The Laker Girls raced Slalom first and were led by the 23rd, 27th, and 30th finishes of Mya Phares, Zoe Komar, and Paige Sharp. Alexis Kotrch took 47th, Ani Hough in 49th, and Kara Constantine in 53rd. They were all able to finish with no disqualifications or issues.
As the day continued and the skiers warmed up, so did the weather. After a break for lunch, the teams returned to the slopes to compete in their other discipline. In Giant Slalom, the Girls finished strong with 30th, 31st, and 40th finishes by Paige Sharp, Mya Phares, and Zoe Komar. Alexis Kotrch, Ani Hough and Katie Riemersama took 51st, 52nd, and 57th. The boys raced Slalom in the afternoon with a strong finish for Aidan Parker, taking 2nd place, Griffin Phares grabbing 8th, Dawson Sherman claiming 13th, and Wilhelm finishing 16th. Charlie Navarre took 23rd and Rymal finished 27th.
Overall, the Lakers had a strong day and are looking good going into regionals next Monday, February 8th, which will conclude the season for most. However, some will advance onto the State Finals set for February 22nd.
