Varsity Boys Basketball Fights for Win Over Whitehall
The highly awaited basketball season is finally here. The Laker boys basketball team faced the Whitehall Vikings in their first game of the 2021-2022 season. It was evident that both schools were ready to be back in the gym, especially with unusual seasons last year due to COVID-19.
The Lakers had a slow start to the game, falling behind 12-16 halfway through the second quarter. Coach Bill Core called important timeouts to gather the team, allowing them to go on a 11-0 scoring run, taking the lead at halftime with a score of 23-16.
After halftime, the excitement from both student sections and both fan bases never let their players down. Both teams made incredible efforts throughout but the Lakers came out fighting to win the game. Their hard work led them on a 35-20 scoring run in the second half, ending the game with a score of 58-36.
Many players for the Lakers contributed greatly to the season opener win, especially sophomore Eli Morrison who totaled up 13 points. Eli reflected on his thoughts from Tuesday night saying, “I was very nervous before the game but after I made my first shot the student section went crazy and everything felt right.” Kaden George also led the team with 15 points, while Jackson Core added 8 and some key steals to secure the win.
The first conference game for the Lakers is Friday, January 7th against key rival the Fruitport Trojans, at Spring Lake. However, the Lakers next face their other cross-town rival, the Buccaneers from Grand Haven, at home on Friday, December 17th.
