Varsity football edged by Hudsonville Unity Christian in a competitive season opener, 29-12

In Spring Lake High School’s very first varsity football game of the season, the Lakers went head to head with the Crusaders from Hudsonville Unity Christian. Despite the hype for the first game of the season, the first quarter remained scoreless. It was the Lakers who drew first blood on Friday night with junior Christian Folkert’s touchdown run to give the Lakers a 6-0 lead in the beginning of the second quarter. However, following the score by the Lakers, Unity Christian put up two quick scores to take a 14-6 lead going into the half.

During the third quarter, turnovers began to become a problem for the Lakers as the Crusaders benefited from 3 interceptions. These turnovers overwhelmed the Lakers in the third quarter as Unity Chirstian took a comfortable 29-6 lead heading into the final quarter of the game.

Throughout the game, sophomore Derrick Paggeot led the Lakers in reception yards with 64 yards on three catches, while senior Stephen Ready led the defense with eight tackles on the night.

In spite of the Lakers’ valiant efforts in the 4th quarter, alongside junior Andrew Vonwahlde’s touchdown run, the Lakers came up short 29-12 at the end of the game. Regardless of the loss, this Lakers team showed promise and flashes of great football against this Grand Rapids Area “Top 10 Team” (according to MLive). The Lakers will take on the Broncos from Coopersville in their next game on Friday, September 25th.
